Sharpen Up Tutoring provides a wide range of services. Unlike larger companies, all of these services are performed by Debra, who has a degree in Education and a minor in mathematics. Debra can combine any of these services to provide the perfect fit for your child.
Reading Difficulties
Reading is the foundation for all other learning. When a child is having difficulty reading, all other subjects suffer. Debra can evaluate your child's reading and comprehension abilities to create a customized plan for developing reading skills including phonemic awareness, decoding, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension questions. These skills combine to create a proficient reader, who easily reads books for enjoyment.
Math
Math is an important part of any child's education. Unfortunately, it is an area that many students struggle with and become frustrated. Debra has a love of math that started at a young age, and continued on through her college career. She enjoys helping students understand mathematical concepts, while filling in gaps that may exist from previous years. She has tutored elementary through college level math, including pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and calculus.
Hearing Impaired / Speech & Language Services
With a degree in Deaf Education and 6 years working with hearing impaired children, both in small classroom settings and itinerant work, Debra brings a vast knowledge of hearing impairment and its related issues to helping your child succeed. She has worked with children who are oral, those who sign, with hearing aids as well as all three models of cochlear implants. She has three years of experience working for a local private oral school for the deaf, and can create customized plans to help your child improve his or her speech and language.
Test Preparation
Debra can develop successful skills and strategies for test taking that are appropriate for simple spelling tests to college admission tests. She provide opportunities to apply skills learned so your child will feel confident, prepared, and familiar with a testing situation. She also teaches relaxation and concentration techniques.
Differentiated Learning Styles
Whether your child is an auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learner, Debra will find a strategy that will result in success. Techniques are shared and practiced, so students can achieve success on their own. She also addresses multiple intelligence styles to build a foundation on your child's strengths.
Individualized Attention
Sharpen Up Tutoring offers a level of attention that most franchise tutoring centers cannot achieve. Debra works one-on-one with your child at the local library or in the comfort of your home. This allows for control of the learning environment and ensures focused attention on your child.
Sharpen Up Tutoring works with parents, teachers, and other professionals as requested. Debra can attend IEP meetings, and support classroom instructors. Your child's progress is continually monitored and shared, with feedback, regular reports, and activities to follow up with at home. All of your child's information is kept in strict confidence unless written authorization is provided.
